POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for supporting the Laboratory and Blood Bank applications.  Works in a matrix reporting relationship which includes:

1.      IS Application Manager.

2.      Laboratory Manager.

Coordinates the planning, implementation and maintenance of the Laboratory applications. Reviews, analyzes and modifies programming systems including encoding, testing, debugging, updating and installing to support the organization’s application systems.

Provide satisfied user support. Consults with users/departments to identify current operation procedures and to clarify program objectives.

Identify deficiencies and make recommendations for improved solutions which impact hospital’s effectiveness to provide quality service to our customers. Ensures that the technology solutions are consistent with current professional standards and practice.

This position will participate, assist and make recommendation to develop and implement service strategies and technology, which optimize the cost effectiveness and reliability of departmental resources, including research and writing reports. This position may be scheduled for IS on-call rotation.

     

EDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE:

Minimum:

(1)   AA degree in Information Systems or related healthcare field. Work experience equivalent (2) Knowledge of computers, Laboratory, and laboratory instruments essential. (3) Strong experience and knowledge of Laboratory procedure and work flow required.

(2)   General computer related experience involving system analysis and providing support to existing applications.  (Equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable). Excellent communication (both oral and written), analytical/problem solving and customer support experience required.

Desired:

(1) Prefer minimum two years experience in clinical or reference laboratory. (2) Degree in computer science. Additional course work and/or degree in data processing or information management. (3) Experience in interfaces and data collections. (4) Recent experience with personal computer applications preferred.

 

 

SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES:

Comprehensive knowledge of Hospital business operations.   Understand the daily operational work flow for Clinical Laboratory, including the Blood Bank. Ability to work well with people of different disciplines with varying degrees of technical experience. Demonstrate problem determination and resolution skills in an automated system-oriented environment. Ability to understand and clearly relate to other members of the organization, software specifications, hardware principles of operation, and general methods of systems software operations, prepare flow charts, diagrams, procedure manuals, records and reports.  Must have resourcefulness and creativity, attention to detail, good interpersonal skills and have a thorough and persistent work ethic. Codes, debugs, tests and refines application programs for departmental use. Must be able to follow instructions, work quickly and accurately in a fast paced environment. Analytical and grammatical skills are necessary to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.  Organizational and multi-tasking skills are essential.  Must be fluent in spoken and written English.  Must be able to work as part of a team in a collaborative manner. Must be able to fulfill the essential functions of the position.

 

PHYSICAL JOB CLASSIFICATION:

PHYSICAL/COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS:

Full range of body movement.  Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.  Ability to sit and stand stationary for extended periods of time.  Ability to use a CRT and personal computer for extended periods of time.  Ability to retrieve objects from overhead and low files or shelves.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Exposed to hectic, sometimes noisy work area with frequent interruptions.  Majority of work is performed indoors, protected from the elements but not necessarily from temperature extremes. Exposure to dust, noise, vibrations, and mechanical/electrical hazards.  Periodically subjected to irregular hours including working on call and varying shifts. Travel.
