POSITION SUMMARY:

Performs all laboratory tests necessary for diagnosis and treatment of patients at the request of attending physicians.  Reports results which are accurate as substantiated by the use of appropriate controls.  Performs and demonstrates proficiency and understanding of routine procedures in one or more of the following laboratory areas: blood bank, microbiology, serology, chemistry, hematology or urinalysis following standardized procedures in accordance with regulatory and/or Hospital quality control standards.  Maintains proficiency in phlebotomy.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

       The Clinical Laboratory Scientist reports to the Chief Technologist.

 

AGE-SPECIFIC:

This position is responsible for age-related physiological, emotional and cognitive needs of the following age groups of patients:  Newborn, Infant, Toddler, School Age, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric.

This position has access to protected health information (PHI).  The protected health information  this position can access is all medical record information.  This position requires this patient health information in order to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description.

 

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

     

·        EDUCATION:

         B.S. in Medical Technology or a comparable health science.

 

·        TRAINING / EXPERIENCE:

 Minimum twelve months as a trainee required.  One to three years acute care hospital experience    as Clinical Laboratory Scientist within the last five years is preferred.                

 

·        LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS:

        Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license is mandatory.

 

·         KNOWLEDGE :

Proficiency in the routine work of all laboratory departments is required.  Expanded knowledge and interest in one or more areas is desirable.  Must demonstrate knowledge of laboratory criteria appropriate to age of clients served.

 

 

·        SPECIAL SKILLS/EQUIPMENT:

Good communication skills both verbally and in writing.  Able to troubleshoot technical problems.  Able to operate Clinical Laboratory equipment and make minor adjustments as needed.  Able to use a Laboratory Information System.  Must be able to follow instructions, work quickly and accurately in a fast paced environment. Organizational and multi-tasking skills are essential. Ability to handle special projects in addition to routine work. 

 

PHYSICAL JOB CLASSIFICATION:

 Able to stand for long periods of time and to cover several workstations concurrently.

 

PHYSICAL/COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to move about well enough to reach items on counters 3 feet high, to reach lightweight items on shelves 5 feet high.  Able to maneuver in and about aisles which may be only 24 inches wide.  Requires sufficient visual acuity to see small print on reagent or control materials.  Must be able to see well enough to distinguish all colors and possess adequate depth perception to identify, describe, and discriminate cellular attributes by microscopic means as might be found on a stained blood or unstained urine sediment slide.  Manual dexterity for handling very small objects in a pincer movement.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Possible exposure to biological, chemical and radioactive hazards.

 

FREEDOM TO ACT/ACCOUNTABILITY:

       Has the authority to prioritize workflow, review, and certify results.  Is accountable for accuracy and

       critical values being reported to physician or agent.  Is accountable for completion of work on shift or

       endorsing to the following shift.

 

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

       Works closely with all laboratory staff.  Has a variety of contacts outside with nurses and physicians to

       confirm tests ordered, reporting of results, and reporting critical values.  The incumbent provides

 laboratory services in both an In and Out Patient setting to patients, as outlined under age-specific   guidelines.

 

CAREER LADDER:

      Can move up to position of Laboratory Section Leader.
