Unit Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY:

Transcribes physician orders and provides clerical support to nursing staff for smooth operation of the nursing unit under the supervision of the shift Charge Nurse.  Has the authority to transport, store or have access to medications as needed for the department.

       

EDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE:

Minimum:

(1) High School diploma or equivalent

Desired:

(1) Previous experience as a Unit Clerk/Assistant in a hospital setting, (2) Previous computer order entry experience

 

LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

(1) BLS-C

 

SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES:

Must have a strong working knowledge of medical terminology and be computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Word.  Must be able to decipher physician orders and complete requisitions.  Must be able to follow instructions, work quickly and accurately in a fast paced environment. Analytical and grammatical skills are necessary to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.  Organizational and multi-tasking skills are essential.  Must be fluent in spoken and written English.  Must be able to fulfill the essential functions of the position.

Communication is an essential skill requiring the ability to see, hear and speak.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Performs the majority of work indoors protected from the elements. May be exposed to: dust, fumes (human waste), heat, cold, noise, vibrations, and human body fluids.
