POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs venipunctures for requested procedures and enters in LIS . Performs setups of Microbiology specimens including entering setup information in LIS. Unpacks and distributes laboratory supplies. Performs clerical duties as assigned.
AGE-SPECIFIC:
This position is responsible for age-related physiological, emotional and cognitive needs of the following age groups of patients: Newborn, Infant, Toddler, School Age, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric.
This position has access to protected health information (PHI). The protected health information this position can access is all medical record information. This position requires this patient health information in order to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description.
MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
· EDUCATION:
High School diploma or equivalent
· TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:
Graduate of a program of laboratory assisting, including phlebotomy, or comparable experience; or Certificate of completion from a California State approved phlebotomy training program.
· LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS:
Effective April 9, 2003, California Certified Phlebotomy Technician certificate.
Employees hired before April 9, 2003 have until April 9, 2006 to obtain the State-issued phlebotomy certificate.
Proficiency in the routine collection of laboratory specimens is desirable. Must demonstrate knowledge of phlebotomy criteria appropriate to age of clients served. Experience in inventory control desirable.
- SPECIAL SKILLS/EQUIPMENT:
Good communication/interpersonal skills. Must be able to follow instructions, work quickly and accurately in a fast paced environment. Organizational and multi-tasking skills are essential.
PHYSICAL JOB CLASSIFICATION:
Must stand and walk for long periods of time.
PHYSICAL/COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to move about well enough to reach items on counters 3 feet high, to reach light weight items on shelves 5 feet high. Able to maneuver in and about aisles which may be only 24 inches wide. Communication is an essential skill requiring the ability to hear and speak. Requires sufficient visual acuity to see small print on reagent or control materials. Must be able to see well enough to distinguish all colors and possess adequate depth perception.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Possible exposure to biological, chemical and radioactive hazards.
FREEDOM TO ACT/ACCOUNTABILITY:
The Phlebotomist has the authority to consult with the Clinical Laboratory Scientists when problems
arise. The Phlebotomist has the responsibility to properly procure and process laboratory specimens for
analysis.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS/CONTACTS:
The Phlebotomist has a variety of contacts inside and outside the laboratory in the performance of
duties. Personable contact with patients is essential. Striving for positive reaction from patients is
necessary. Good communication with hospital personnel on the floors is essential. The incumbent
provides laboratory services in both an In and Out Patient setting to patients, as outlined under age-
specific guidelines.
