Cardiac Rehabilitation (Outpatient)
Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation is a comprehensive program designed to improve the physical and mental functioning of patients with cardiovascular disorders. Cardiac Rehab is particularly beneficial for patients with diagnoses or treatments such as balloon angioplasty, coronary artery bypass, heart attack, irregular heart beat, pacemaker, or stable angina. The program works to reduce the risk of another cardiac event through the application of medically supervised exercise and health education.
Potential benefits of the Cardiac Rehab program are:
- More energy and capacity for work and leisure activities
- Greater resistance to stress, anxiety, and fatigue
- Increased stamina and strength
- Improved efficiency of the heart and lungs
- Loss of extra pounds and help with ideal weight maintanence
- Reduced risk of heart attach
- Lower blood pressure
Another significant part of the Cardiac Rehab program is the opportunity participants have to share experiences and to recieve support and encouragement from each other. This is a unique environment for patients going through similar events and sharing similar concerns.
Outpatient services follow Phase II & III of the recognized Cardiac Rehabilitation program:
Phase II Phase II typically begins within weeks of discharge from the hospital. Participation requires a physician referral and the completion f a low-level exercise (treadmill) test. This test is used by the Cardiac Rehab staff to develop a personal exercise regime for each participant, and to ensure that participants can tolerate the minimum level of exercise without complications.
Phase II is usually conducted over 36 visits (three times a week for 12 weeks). Based on a personally designed plan, patients may spend this time working on equipment such as treadmills, stationary bicycles, and will be lead in stretching and strenghtening classes. During this time, the patient's EKG is monitored with a telemetry machine. The telemetry reports are evaluated by the referring physician for progress and possible abnormalities. Cardiac Rehab instructors and and referring physician then work together to ensure that patients recieve the most comprehensive care and monitoring.
Phase III Phase III is a maintenance program involving pulse-monitored exercise classes, and the option of continued nutrition and heart education classes. Participation in Phase III is limited to patients continuing from Phase II, or those with physician approval. Phase III can be particularly beneficial for patients with a high risk of future cardiac events, or those with diabetes, hypertension, obesity, or high cholesterol.
Phase III classes meet three times a week for one hour sessions.
