Joint Works Orthopedic Program

The Joint Works Orthopedic program has been an integral part of Doctors Medical Center since 1995, helping hundreds of people from ages 30 to 90 return to an active lifestyle.  Joint Works is a comprehensive program for those afflicted by arthritis of the knees, hips, shoulders, and suffering the debilitating effects of constant pain.  Recognizing the increased success in supportive environments, Joint Works is designed for small groups of patients to undertake together.  The program integrates patient education with a sophisticated medical approach and a 28-bed orthopedic surgical unit.

Orientation
Patients receive guidance and support through the entire process, starting with a special orientation several days before surgery.  At this time, there is a chance to meet the Joint Works staff and fellow patients.  The orientation familiarizes patients with what to expect before, during, and after surgery, and how to participate in the healing process to promote faster recovery.  It also provides a relaxed atmosphere for patients have all of their questions answered.

Surgery
Every effort is made to assure a patient's surgical experience as efficent and comfortable as possible.  Surgeries are typically completed within 3 hours, and, in most cases, patients are up and walking the same afternoon.  The Joint Works surgical unit has made several accomodations to the special needs of it's patients, including the construction of several rooms with more space and larger doorways to accomodate individuals who may have problems navigating in traditional environments.

Post-Surgery Recovery
Following surgery, a rehabiliation program is specifically designed to the needs of each patient.  The program, as determined by insurance, may involve visits to an out-patient rehabilitation center or even at-home rehabilitation care.  Before leaving the hospital, all patients will participate in a group physical therapy session, gaining support and sharing experiences with one another.
