Rehabilitation / Physical, Occupational & Speech Therapy
The Rehabilitation Department at Doctors Medical Center is a full-service program designed to help patients in recovery, or those living with a disability, improve their mobility, physical health and emotional well being. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, the experienced team of physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists design indiviual programs to meet the needs of patients with neurological deficits, and those recovering from orthopedic and cardiac surgeries, amputations and burns. Working to acheive the highest level of independence possible, in-patient and out-patient therapists utilize a variety of rehabilitation techniques.
Physical Therapy Physical therapists focus on restoring, maintaining and enhancing a patient's optimal physical function. Treatment involves a variety of therapies including exercise, the application of heat or mild electrical current, and even the education and support needed for needed for recovery. The goals of physical therapy include relieving pain, improving mobility, and restoring physical functioning and overall fitness.
Occupational Therapy Occupation therapists focus on helping patients live with the highest possible level of independence. Occupational therapy may include assistance and trainning in such daily activities as dressing, bathing, eating, housekeeping, gardening and cooking. The overall goal of occupational therapy is protecting joints and conserving energy.
Physical and occupational therapy services also include evaluations for splinting, orthotics and other adaptive devices.
Speech / Language Pathology Speech therapists provide individualized evaluations, assessments and treatment aimed at helping people with communication impairments such as aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia, reading, writing, augmentative / alternative communication. Speech therapists also focus on helping people who have cognitive impairments and swallowing disorders.
Burn Rehabilitation The Department's burn rehabilitation specialist, Ron Moore, OTR/L, has over 15 years of experience working with burns and hands. Coordinating with the multi-disciplinary rehabilitation team to address the individual needs of each patient, burn rehabilitation may include custom facial orthosis, custom pressure garment measurement and fitting, and fabrication of custom splints for support or function.
