Cardiac Rehabilitation

Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation is a comprehensive program designed to improve the physical and mental functioning of patients with cardiovascular disorders.  By participating in the program's medically supervised exercise and health education sessions, patients can reduce their risk of having another cardiac event.

Cardiac Rehabilitation is tailored to meet the patient's individual needs and goals.  It is particularly beneficial for patients who have had coronary artery bypass graft surgery, heart attack, angina, heart valve repair/replacement, coronary angioplasty or coronary stenting, heart or heart-lung transplant.

Potential benefits of the Cardiac Rehab program are:

  1. More energy and capacity for work and leisure activities
  2. Greater resistance to stress, anxiety, and fatigue
  3. Increased stamina and strength
  4. Improved efficiency of the heart and lungs
  5. Loss of extra pounds and help with ideal weight maintenance
  6. Reduced risk of heart attack
  7. Lower blood pressure

Another significant part of the Cardiac Rehab program is the opportunity participants have to share experiences and to receive support and encouragement from each other.  This is a unique environment for patients going through similar events and sharing similar concerns.

Phase II

Phase II typically begins within weeks of discharge from the hospital.  Participation requires a physician referral and the completion of a low-level exercise (treadmill) test.

Phase II is usually conducted over 36 visits (three times a week for 12 weeks).  Based on a personally designed plan, patients may spend this time working on equipment such as treadmills, stationary bicycles, and will be lead in stretching and strengthening classes.  During this time, the patient's EKG is monitored with a telemetry machine.  The telemetry reports are evaluated by the referring physician for progress and possible abnormalities.  Cardiac Rehab Staff and referring physician then work together to ensure that patients receive the most comprehensive care and monitoring.

Phase III

Phase III is a maintenance program involving pulse-monitored exercise classes, and the option of continued nutrition and heart education classes.  Participation in Phase III is limited to patients continuing from Phase II, or those with physician approval.  Phase III can be particularly beneficial for patients with a high risk of future cardiac events, or those with diabetes, hypertension, obesity, or high cholesterol.

Phase III classes meet three times a week for one hour sessions.
