Who We Are

A vital part of the healthcare team here at Doctors Medical Center, the DMC Service League has a variety of service areas, from direct patient contact to helping behind the scenes. Being a volunteer at Doctors Medical Center is rewarding not only for the volunteer, but also the patients and staff.

 

Volunteers are asked to give a minimum of four hours a week for at least six months. A sampling of the opportunities for service are:

  • Information Desk
  • Admitting
  • Cancer Center
  • Gift Shop
  • Medical Floors
  • Emergency Department

Our Service League is committed to supporting the hospital's goal of maintaining our status as an excellent hospital, and are a vital part of the team. As a volunteer you will receive training, support and satisfaction in knowing you are making a difference.

Doctors Medical Center asks all volunteers to commit to: 

  • A minimum of 100 hours of service
  • At least 6 months commitment
  • A minimum of 4 hours each week 

How to Become a Volunteer

Whatever your reason for volunteering, you will find it very rewarding and your contribution will be both needed and appreciated. To apply, please complete the Service League Application or call the Service League at (510) 970-5334 to request that an application be mailed to your home. Completed applications can be returned by mail, fax or email.

 

 

Interested applicants must be over 18 years old and pass mandated health and background check requirements prior to beginning their volunteer work. Once your application has been received and reviewed, a member of the Hospital's Service League will contact you to set up an interview. Please bring a complete set of the following required health records to your interview:

 

  • Record of Titers (i.e., MMR and Varicella)
  • Record of your last tuberculosis skin test (i.e., PPD) or, due to a recent previous shortage, we will accept Quantiferon Gold or T-Spotor. And, a chest x-ray if you have been determined to need one after a past tuberculsis test.
  • During the Flu Season from October 1st through March 31st of the following year, a record of your current influenza vaccination or declination form is also needed.

 

Individuals who are unable to provide their health records will be asked to provide a $20 deposit at the time of the interview that is refundable after the first 100 hours of service.

 

Our Accomplishments

In this last year alone, our Service League has donated over 28,000 hours of time, allowing us to provide such services and gifts as:

  • Scholarships: $1,500 Annually to deserving students in the medical or healthcare field 
  • Hospital Equipment: Including wheelchairs, new telemetry equipment and other resources that support direct patient care.
  • Community Service: Assistance with monthly blood drives, annual charitable drives, and community education and outreach.
  • Fundraising: Through administration of the hospital gift shop proceeds
  • Health Screenings: Providing free monthly blood pressure screenings.
  • Improving our patients' experience: Ensuring a positive hospital experience by assisting and directing visitors to their desired destinations.

Scholarships for Students-- the 2014 Scholarship Application Process is Now Open! 

Each year the Service League offers Carol Welsh Memorial Scholarships to deserving students who live in West Contra Costa and are pursuing training in the medical or healthcare field.
